Symposium 2017

Université Laval's School of Architecture /

March 31st to April 2nd

The symposium « Youth in architecture: Where’re we goin’ ? » is officially back for a seventh edition ! The event will take place from March 31st to April 2nd at the School of Architecture, Laval University.

This annual event is an opportunity for students of different universities and the professionals in the field to share thoughts and exchange point of views about the future of the architectural practice. In the previous editions, the symposium has reunited about 200 future professionals and 20 panelists around conferences, discussions and activities allowing participants to share their vision of architecture. Born from a student initiative of Laval University six years ago, the event is now alternatively organised once a year by the students of Montreal University, McGill University and Laval University.

Culture of Architecture

The theme « The architecture of culture » refers to the architecture’s capacity to reflect, and even to mold, the cultural and societal context. From this point of view, architecture is no longer seen as an absolute or autonomous object, but becomes a symbol and an identity marker for the emerging society. Whether architecture embodies a built heritage or a contemporary expression, the issues of authenticity, the reach of a work towards a public and the coherence between the image and its purpose become very important.

Architecture of Culture

The theme « The culture of architecture » will explore the way in which the practices of architecture and design in the province of Quebec condition and question themselves. The conferences of this theme will lead to an introspective look on both the practical and the theoretical side of the contemporary architecture. We are thus interested in the renewal capacity through which the practice goes during a revolution, as well as the opening of the architectural culture to a wider audience. We will then question the tensions and the contradictions existing between the internal and the external perceptions taking place in the field.

Emerging Practices

Each year, several young firms from all around the province of Quebec break into the field of architecture and carry out significant projects. Some young firms which stand out for their dynamism and their audacity are being invited to discuss the challenges behind the first steps of a firm in the Quebec context.

Modern Architectural Heritage

Having experienced a splendor development at the turn of the Quiet Revolution, today our territory is filled with buildings reflecting the high aspirations of a modern Quebec. At the time when this heritage requires a position statement about its future, we will seek to better understand the value that can be attributed to these works in our contemporary society.

Art and Architecture

Can art as an expression deliberately addressed to the senses and emotions be manifested through architecture? Brought together in a panel, architects, artists and stakeholders involved in Quebec’s cultural community will discuss from a theoretical and practical point of view the different connections between Arts and Architecture.

Architectural Criticism

What role does the architectural criticism take or could take in the Quebec’s media? Pioneers in the field will come and discuss about their practice and the vision of their impacts on the architectural culture as well as on the opinion of the general public.
